Breaking Free: What Financial Independence Really Looks Like

What does financial independence really look like?

It’s not just sipping margaritas on a beach in early retirement (although yes, please). It’s waking up every day knowing your bills are paid, your future is funded, and no one else controls your next move, or your calendar – not your boss, not your debt, not even the economy.

Let’s break free together.  Ready?

What It Actually Means to Be Financially Independent

Most people think financial independence means “being rich.”

Nope.  Not even close (although who would resist the extra stash?)

It means:

  • You cover all your living expenses without help
  • You’re not tied to debt or paycheck stress
  • You can choose how you spend your time—because money isn’t calling the shots

In short? You’re free.

And here’s the thing: You don’t have to wait until you’re 65 or 95 to get there.

Signs You’re Headed Toward Financial Independence

You don’t have to be 100% there yet to feel the shift. If you’re doing any of these things, you’re on the right track:

✅ You know how much you spend each month
✅ You’re saving automatically—even if it’s just $50
✅ You have a plan to eliminate debt
✅ You understand your credit score and check it regularly
✅ You’re starting to invest for the future (yes, you can start late!)

Every small step counts. Think of financial independence like building a house. Brick by brick. Layer by layer.  One day at a time.

But First: You Have to Break Free

Let’s get real. Many of us weren’t taught how to manage money, especially as women. Maybe you learned to stay quiet about finances or thought someone else would take care of it.

But now? It’s your turn.

Here’s how to begin breaking free:

1. Take Ownership of Your Money Story

Where are you now? Where do you want to go? And what beliefs are holding you back?

Start by asking:

  • Do I believe I’m capable of building wealth?

  • Do I avoid financial conversations or decisions?

  • Am I living by default or design?

Beliefs are an intregal part of breaking free.  You can’t out run them, out think them, or bury them in a drawer.

2. Pay Yourself First

Before you pay the bills or buy the extras, pay you. Even if it’s just $25 or $50 a paycheck.  This is seriously important.
This habit tells your brain: “My future matters.” It also says, “I matter to me.”  Over time, it grows into wealth-building power.

3. Build Your Safety Net

Having even $500 in a savings account changes everything. It gives you breathing room and helps you stop relying on credit cards when life gets bumpy.  It gives you unbelievable peace of mind.

Then aim for 3–6 months of expenses. You’re building a cushion, not just a bank balance.

4. Create Streams of Income

It’s not just about spending less—it’s about creating more.  Whether it’s a side hustle, selling unused items, or getting a raise, look for ways to increase your income so your money works for you.  The “gig” economy is here to stay, why not be part of it?

5. Eliminate Bad Debt First

Debt is like financial quicksand – it slows you down and steals your options.  I’ve been there before, it’s not the place to make your home.  A great place to start is the Debt Slayer System, which helps you knock out debt step by step and get your confidence back.

6. Invest in Your Freedom

This isn’t about the stock market. This is about you.

Learning, growing, trying new things—investing in your future self.

Read the books. Take the class. Talk to a trusted advisor.  Pop into our workshops.  Whatever you do – get equipped.  Financial independence doesn’t come from luck. It comes from learning and doing.

Your Freedom Starts With One Decision

You don’t have to have it all figured out to get started. You just have to decide:  I want more. I’m ready to take back my power. I believe financial independence is for me.

Spoiler alert: It is.
